Chapter 9 "Did I Miss Anything? Did I Miss Everything?"
This book forces you to look at your teaching techniques and decide how to make them better. Good teachers always look at a lesson and think about how to make it better for the next time. This book encourages you to think and make changes. Some want a quick answer but a lot of thought is needed to make a positive change.
I liked the quotes from the veteran teachers -- about laughing at yourself and the ways you used to teach. Good teachers are always looking for new and better ways to teach the curriculum. I am always searching for a better way to connect with kids and get them excited about reading. The last thing in the world I would want to do is teach the "same, old way" year after year.
The story in this chapter about the student that was so frustrated about reading poems that he wasn't putting much effort into it was great. Tovani just kept giving him the tools that they learned in class until one time it clicked. That's how it is with everyone, including adults, and sometimes I forget that because it seems like I repeat myself so many times for the same thing. But I would keep repeating it and trying new ways to help them understand just to get one more student that understands. It's so wonderful to see their eyes light up when they get something or can finally play a part right!
