Chapter 2 by November 10, Chapters 3 & 4 by November 17, Chapter 5 by November 24, Chapter 6 by December 1,
Chapter 7 & 8 by December 8,and Chapter 9 by December 15.
I really liked the idea about the conversation calendars. This could work well with my students especially the ones who might not understand the material and would be more willing to let me know through the calendar entry. I can see where this would very time consuming on my part. That means I would have to respond to about 90 entries a day. The reading logs are a great idea. I liked the way they were put together. There were numerous parts to the response. The literacy classes I believe are using this type of assessement. The students are then forced to think while they are reading and the teacher is able to assess their effort and progress.
The chapter made a brief comment about how assessment measures finite knowledge. I am concerned that students forget the finite knowledge, but don't have the skills (other than googling) to "refind" the information they need. Any comments? Like Michelle, I liked the calendar idea. I know it could be time consuming to respond. The chapter gave the suggestion of rotating the classes where teachers respond. Might be a good idea. Obviously, everyone would have to be on board with it. Block teachers do have fewer students than other staff on the 8 hour schedule. If literacy teachers would use this type of assessment I'd be happy to help out. Ultimately we want students to be able to know all the "answers" from the final exam on page 114. If they were able to consistently use the strategies that the questions referred to, our comprehension would be much higher.
There were some great ideas but not a lot that I could use in orchestra. The one that I have thought about using is the file folder where they would put assignments through out the year in. I could have them play at certain times during the year, save it, and burn it on a CD for them. This would show their progress which is always a confident booster and could be part of the final grade. The students could have a mini-conference with me as well... The only problem with this is time and equipment. We just received a recorder but the mic isn't great for lower strings... And we have to rehearse and be ready to play up until the last day of school... I've wanted to do something like this every year. Well, now it's something to think about for next year :)
